Track 4: Black Ties
lyrics (v1/working)
the man under the lights
has told me what to buy to make me clean
he’s selling me a sky
that smells enough like summer to believe
but i don’t mean to be a bother
so i’ll go.
empty aisle eyes
idolizing empty chemistry
(just tell us where to follow
and we’ll follow)
it’s overemphasized
caramelized, it’s good because it’s sweet
and i don’t mean to be a bother
to be a bother so i’ll go
i’m so over this,
i’m just so over it
and it’s just like me
to have a problem so i’ll go
he finally found his ride
finally filled it up with gasoline
(just tell us where to follow
and we’ll follow down)
he finally prophesied
and they’ll be safe
if they can just believe
but it’s just like us
to have a problem so we’ll go
we’re so over this,
we’re just so over it
we’re all so over this
we’re just so over it
we’re done
we’ve got
black ties and black cars
and dynamite bricks,
lockpicks, a breach to break in
and take back one lie at a time, boys
this is it:
we’ve got a heist.
a dead sky and dead stars
an ending in hand—
one chance
to silence the humming machine
line it up, pick your shot
and tonight
rip out the root of this weed
what a night! can’t you see,
it’s the end of a regime!
what a night to be free from
a shepherd getting fat off his sheep
throw the switch
and we’ll find out if faith’s catastrophe
or if it’s just that all his fame is blasphemy
lore/meta
the nightingales have rallied their strength and have set out to confront the Man Under the Lights. this is them hyping themselves up to go and break in to his church.
lyrics aren’t all the way finished. note that the lyrics here do not match the lyrics in the demo. the lyrics on this page are the most updated versions.
i think that “throw the switch and we’ll find out if faith’s catastrophe, or if it’s just that all his fame is blasphemy” is a bar. as i’m thinking about it, though, there might need to be a fifth song that i should write sort of lamenting just how far they took it.
i go back and forth on if this needs a hooky chorus. on the one hand, i like how frustrated this chorus is, just repeating “we’re so over it,” but musically it might need something that gives it a bit of lift.
in my head, there’s a breakdown in here somewhere. idk where, though. or what it sounds like. i also don’t want to overthink it.
